Statement by the Press Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan on the Provincial Election of Iraq

- Japan welcomes the implementation of the second Provincial Election of Iraq on Saturday, April 20.
- While it was regrettable that election obstructions, such as murder of candidates, were observed across Iraq during the period of the election campaign, Japan pays respect to the Iraqi government and the people of Iraq for their efforts that enabled the holding of this election despite these despicable acts.
- Japan participated in the election observation activities through its Embassy in Baghdad to support the fair and smooth implementation of the election.
- Japan hopes that the Iraqi government and the people of Iraq will continue to tackle their domestic problems through further progress in the political and democratic process and national reconciliation. Japan will continue to support such efforts of the Iraqi government and the people of Iraq.
