Election of Ambassador KAIFU Atsushi, Permanent Representative of Japan to the International Organizations in Vienna, as the next Chair of the Preparatory Commission for the CTBTO(Statement by Foreign Press Secretary KOBAYASHI Maki)

- On Monday, December 4th, at the 61st session of the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), Ambassador KAIFU Atsushi, Permanent Representative of Japan to the International Organizations in Vienna, was elected as the next Chair of the Commission, and will serve for one year starting from January 2024.
- As the only country to have suffered atomic bombings during war, Japan has been vigorously promoting realistic and practical nuclear disarmament efforts, including the early entry into force of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), and has supported the activities of the Preparatory Commission for the CTBTO as part of these efforts.
Taking the opportunity of Ambassador Kaifu's appointment as the Chair of the Preparatory Commission for the CTBTO, Japan intends to further contribute to the efforts including the promotion of the entry into force of the CTBT and the development of its verification system.
