On October 23, commencing at 11:00 a.m. for approximately 30 minutes, Mr.Tsuji Kiyoto, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, received a courtesy call from Ms. Lydie Evrard, Deputy Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), on the occation of her visit to Japan.

  1. State Minister Tsuji welcomed the Deputy Director General’s visit to Japan and expressed his gratitude to all the support that the IAEA has given to Japan on the handling of the ALPS treated water at TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS). State Minister Tsuji also expressed that Japan attaches great importance to the efforts of the IAEA, which plays an important role in the nuclear field, and that strengthening the relations with the IAEA, which is neutral and highly professional, is vital for ensuring transparency in the safety of the dischaerge of ALPS treated water into the sea, bearing in mind the recently signed “Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) between the Government of Japan and the IAEA”.
  2. In the response, Deputy Director General Evrard explained the outcomes of the visit including the report on the recent visit to TEPCO's FDNPS confirming that the discharge of ALPS treated water is being carried out as planned in accordance with IAEA safety standards.
  3. Both sides confirmed that Japan and the IAEA would continue to closely coordinate together regarding this matter.
