Telephone Talk between Foreign Minister Kamikawa and The Honorable Ambassador Tai, United States Trade Representative

On October 5, commencing at around 8.50 a.m., Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone talk (for approximately 25 minutes) with the Honorable Ambassador Katherine Tai, United States Trade Representative. The overview of the meeting is as follows:

  1. Ambassador Tai offered her congratulations to Minister Kamikawa for her assumption of office. Minister Kamikawa stated that she wishes to work closely with Ambassador Tai not only on bilateral trade issues, but also on a wide range of agendas, including the economic order in the Indo-Pacific region, cooperation in international organizations such as the WTO, and economic security.
  2. Moreover, on the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF), Minister Kamikawa stated that Japan will continue to actively contribute to the discussions in the IPEF. In response, Ambassador Tai emphasized the importance of cooperation with Japan toward making progress in the negotiations.
  3. In addition, both sides exchanged their views on WTO reform and the Japan-U.S. trade partnership., They also affirmed their intention to work closely together toward the G7 Trade Ministers' Meeting in Osaka-Sakai at the end of October, noting that four out of all representatives at the meeting would be female.
