Telephone Meeting between Vice Minister Mori and Deputy Secretary Sherman

On April 14, commencing at 9:00 am, for about 45 minutes, Mr. MORI Takeo, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone meeting with the Ambassador Wendy R. Sherman, Deputy Secretary of State of the United States of America. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
- The two sides, building upon the results of the Japan-U.S. Summit Talk and the Japan-U.S. Foreign Ministers’ Meeting recently held at Brussels, concurred to continue close coordination between Japan and the United States toward further strengthening the Japan-U.S. Alliance and realizing a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific,” including through cooperation among Japan-Australia-India-U.S (Quad).
- The two sides harshly condemned the killing of innocent Ukrainian civilians by Russian troops as a violation of international humanitarian law and absolutely unforgivable. The two sides then concurred to continue close coordination between Japan and the United States as well as with the international community, including the G7, in implementing sanction measures against Russia and providing aid for Ukraine.
- The two sides also exchanged their views on a broad range of other recent regional issues, including China and Southeast Asia, and concurred to continue close coordination to lead the efforts for the peace and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific region and the international community.
