Lifting of sanctions by the United States against the International Criminal Court
(Statement by Press Secretary YOSHIDA Tomoyuki)
April 3, 2021
- The Government of Japan welcomes the United States’ announcement to lift its sanctions against certain persons associated with the International Criminal Court (ICC).
- With the objective of fighting against impunity for serious crimes of concern to the international community and strengthening the rule of law, the Government of Japan consistently attaches importance to the ICC as a State Party to the Rome Statute of the ICC.
- The Government of Japan is of the view that the ICC should become a court which represents the international community as a whole and that it is important for the Court to gain broad support thereof to its activities. The Government of Japan hopes that the ICC, while undertaking its reform, will further promote constructive dialogue with non-States Parties including the United States.
