Japan-Russia Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Talk
On October 16, commencing at 6:45 p.m. for approximately 1 hour, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone talk with H.E. Mr. Lavrov, Sergey Viktorovich, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. The overview is as follows.
1. Based on the recent Japan-Russia Summit Telephone Talk, the two Ministers shared the view to continue frank discussions at the foreign minister level as well, in order to advance consultations and cooperation between the two countries in various fields, such as negotiations on a peace treaty, the Four-Island Exchange Program and other programs including grave visits by airplane, joint economic activities on the Four Northern Islands, economy, people-to-people exchanges, and security.
2. The two Ministers also discussed international situations and shared the view to continue close communication. Regarding the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, Minister Motegi stated that he welcomed the agreement on a ceasefire reached through the mediation of Minister Lavrov as an important step toward a peaceful solution to the conflict. Minister Motegi said that it is crucial for all concerned parties to fully implement the ceasefire agreement, while the situation remains fragile.
