Awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to the World Food Programme (WFP)

I heartily express my congratulations to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) on winning the Nobel Peace Prize.
As the world faces crises such as starvation, conflicts, and the recent COVID-19 pandemic, and as the number of people suffering from hunger is at a record high, the Government of Japan appreciates WFP’s efforts for expanding food assistance to those people. The Government of Japan also pays respect to all WFP staff who are dedicatedely carrying out their mission under severe environment.
The role of the WFP, which has achieved prompt and effective response to humanitarian crises, is gaining more importance than ever. Japan intends to further strengthen cooperation with the WFP.
