The Situation in the Republic of Mali
(Statement by Press Secretary YOSHIDA Tomoyuki)
1. Japan is deeply concerned by the unfolding developments commencing in the morning of August 18 in Mali, where a group of Malian army soldiers arrested President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, Prime Minister Boubou Cisse as well as other members of the Government of Mali by force.
2. Japan strongly condemns such actions by the group of army soldiers, joining the messages in the statement of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, the communique issued by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the statement attributable to the Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General condemning the actions by them.
3. Japan calls on all parties concerned regarding the situation in Mali to restore constitutional order at an early date, halt violence, and make efforts toward a peaceful solution to the ongoing unrest.
