The Announcement by the Coalition Forces of a Ceasefire in Yemen
(Statement by Press Secretary OHTAKA Masato)

April 12, 2020

1. The Government of Japan welcomes the announcement by the Coalition Forces led by the Government of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia of a two-week comprehensive ceasefire from April 9 (local time) in Yemen. The spread of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in conflict-affected countries, including Yemen, is a major concern for the international community. Japan strongly urges all parties to respond to the call for a ceasefire by UN Secretary-General Guterres.

2. The peace and stability in the Middle East, including in Yemen, is important for international peace and stability. The Government of Japan supports the efforts by Mr. Griffiths, Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General, toward a political solution of the conflict in Yemen.

3. The Government of Japan has been engaging in humanitarian assistance in Yemen and remains committed to continuously contributing to the region in cooperation with countries concerned so as to maintain and reinforce peace and stability in the Middle East.
