Special Envoy for the Middle East Peace Mr. Kono Pays a Courtesy Call on
H.E. Dr. Mahmoud Abbas, President of Palestine

On February 4th (local time), Mr. Kono Masaharu, Representative of the Government of Japan and Special Envoy for the Middle East Peace, paid a courtesy call on H.E. Dr. Mahmoud Abbas, President of Palestine, during his visit to Palestine. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

1. Following the release of the vision for the Middle East Peace by the United States, Mr. Kono stated that Japan remains steadfast in its support for the realization of a two-State solution of Israel and a future state of Palestine, living side by side in peace and security, in line with relevant UN Security Council resolutions and other agreements, and that Japan continues its efforts, including to facilitate confidence building among concerned parties.

2. Mr. Kono also announced that Japan decided to extend new humanitarian assistance of approximately 33 million US dollars to Palestinian refugees and Palestine, in the fields of healthcare and women’s empowerment.

3. In response, President Abbas expressed his appreciation for Japan’s assistance and stated that he would assert Palestine’s position on the Middle East Peace with support and cooperation from the international community.
