Holding of the Referendum in Bougainville, Papua New Guinea

December 12, 2019

1. The Government of Japan welcomes the holding of the referendum on November 23, in Bougainville, Papua New Guinea, was held peacefully.

2. The Government of Japan assisted JPY 101 million in order to support the fair implementation of the referendum and dispatched a referendum observer mission headed by Mr. TAKATA Toshihisa, Ambassador for the Pacific Island Region.

3. The Government of Japan hopes that post-referendum discussions between the Papua New Guinea Government and the Bougainville Autonomous Government will be held peacefully based on the Bougainville Peace Agreement.
