The Adoption of the Draft Resolution on Nuclear Disarmament submitted by Japan to the Plenary Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly
1. On December 13 (December 12 local time), the draft resolution entitled “Joint Courses of Action and Future-oriented Dialogue towards a world without nuclear weapons (PDF)”, submitted by Japan, was adopted with the supports of 160 countries in the Plenary Meeting of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly.
2. This draft resolution was adopted in the First Committee of the UN General Assembly on November 2 (November 1 local time). It reaffirms the commitment to the ultimate goal of eliminating nuclear weapons. Looking ahead to the 2020 NPT Review Conference, the draft resolution also stresses the importance for the international community to take immediate actions together and to conduct future-oriented dialogues on nuclear disarmament with a view to maintaining and strengthening the regime of the Treaty on the Non-proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).
3. Through this draft resolution, Japan aims to contribute to the 2020 NPT Review Conference. The draft resolution this year was adopted with widespread supports from many states including nuclear-weapon-States and the states in favor of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
4. Japan will continue to work tenaciously to proceed steadily towards the realization of a world free of nuclear weapons.
