Iran’s announcement on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action
(Statement by Press Secretary OHTAKA Masato)

November 12, 2019

1. On Thursday, November 7 (local time), Iran announced that it restarted uranium enrichment activities at the Fordow facility, which are restrained by the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

2. Japan supports the JCPOA which contributes to strengthening the international non-proliferation regime and thereby to the stability of the Middle East. We are strongly concerned about Iran’s continued reduction of its commitment under the JCPOA including this time’s announcement. Japan once again strongly urges Iran to comply with the JCPOA, to immediately return to its commitment under the JCPOA and to refrain from further measures that may undermine the JCPOA. We also call upon Iran to fully cooperate with the IAEA based on the JCPOA and in accordance with all its nuclear obligations, in particular its Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement and the Additional Protocol.

3. Japan will continue making its diplomatic efforts toward easing tensions and stabilizing the situation in the Middle East region in coordination with relevant countries and international organizations.
