Iran’s announcement on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action
(Statement by Press Secretary Takeshi Osuga)

July 8, 2019
  1. On Sunday, July 7 (local time), Iran announced that Iran will start uranium enrichment exceeding the limit of 3.67% set by the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
  2. Japan has been making repeated calls at various levels with the international community to Iran for complying with the JCPOA based on Japan’s support for the JCPOA which contributes to strengthening the international non-proliferation regime and thereby to the stability of the Middle East. We are strongly concerned that Iran made the announcement despite such repeated calls. Japan sincerely hopes for easing tensions and stabilizing the situation in the Middle East region and once again strongly urges Iran to comply with the JCPOA, to immediately return to its commitment under the agreement and to refrain from further measures that may undermine the agreement.
  3. Japan will continue its diplomatic efforts toward easing tensions and stabilizing the situation in the Middle East region in coordination with relevant countries and international organizations.
