The continued large-scale demonstrations in the Republic of Iraq
(Statement by Press Secretary OHTAKA Masato)

November 9, 2019

1. Japan is concerned about the large number of casualties during the large-scaled demonstrations that have been taking place in Iraqi capital Baghdad as well as in the middle and southern parts of the country. Japan calls on all parties to exercise maximum restraint not to cause further casualties, and will continue to pay close attention to the situation.

2. Japan expects that Iraq, as a cornerstone of the peace and stability in the Middle East, will overcome the current situation in a peaceful manner. To this end, Japan strongly hopes that the Government of Iraq will promptly undertake reforms in a manner that will broadly gain trust by the Iraqi people including by addressing their aspirations expressed through the current demonstrations, and will achieve the stability and development of the country.
