Holding of Presidential Elections in Afghanistan
(Statement by Press Secretary OTAKA Masato)
1. Presidential elections in Afghanistan took place on September 28. The Government of Japan commends the determination and courage of the Afghan citizens who went to the polls under severe security situation, and expresses its respect for the security forces who ensured security for the voting as well as for those who contributed to carrying out the voting.
2. The Government of Japan strongly condemns acts of terrorism and obstruction during the election period and on the voting day. The Government of Japan extends its condolences to the victims of terrorism, and wishes for the earliest recovery of those who were wounded.
3. The Government of Japan strongly hopes that the process up to the announcement of the final results, including counting and tallying of ballots and responding to complaints, will proceed in a fair, prompt and peaceful manner, and will continue to monitor the situation closely.
