Meeting between State Minister Sato and the State Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Somalia


On October 7, commencing at around 9:35 a.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. Masahisa Sato, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, met with H.E. Mr. Abdulkadir Ahmed Kheyr Abdi, State Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Somalia, who is visiting Japan to attend the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) Ministerial Meeting. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
1. In opening statements, State Minister Sato sincerely welcomed State Minister Abdulkadir’s attendance at the TICAD Ministerial Meeting, and stated that the peace and prosperity of Somalia is important for the peace and stability of the region and the world.
2. State Minister Sato also noted that Japan is implementing assistance to Somalia in the priority areas of reinstating delivery of basic social services, strengthening capacity in public security, and revitalizing international industry. He referred to the fact that, to date, four young people from Somalia have studied in Japan under the African Business Education (ABE) Initiative and that Japan will continue to assist in the development of human resources for industries in Somalia.
3. In response, State Minister Abdulkadir expressed his appreciation for Japan’s assistance in resolving the various challenges that Somalia’s young population are facing, including in terms of education, health and employment. He also promised cooperation towards TICAD 7 next year.
4. In addition, the two Ministers held an exchange of views regarding cooperation in the international arena including the North Korea situation and Security Council reform.
