On October 7, commencing at around 4:30 p.m. for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. Masahisa Sato, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a meeting with H.E. Amb. Barry Faure, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Seychelles, who visited Japan to attend the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) Ministerial Meeting. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

1. At the outset, State Minister Sato sincerely welcomed Secretary Faure’s attendance at the TICAD Ministerial Meeting. He also stated that Japan places importance on the bilateral relations with Seychelles from the perspective of promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific as Seychelles is located in a strategically important location in the Indian Ocean.

2. Secretary Faure expressed his appreciation for Japan’s long-year-assistance to Africa through the TICAD process since 1993, and to Seychelles, particularly in the fisheries sector, and promised cooperation towards TICAD 7 taking place next year. He also noted that Seychelles is making efforts to counter piracy and expressed his expectations for Japan’s cooperation and fishery activity by Japanese vessels.

3. State Minister Sato stated that he hopes that his recent visit to Seychelles in August and the opening of the Embassy of Japan in the Republic of Seychelles in January 2019 would help to further deepen bilateral relations.

4. In addition, the two Ministers exchanged their views on cooperation in the international arena including the North Korea situation and Security Council reform.
