Courtesy Call on Foreign Minister Taro Kono by Dr. Seth Berkley, Chief Executive Officer, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance
On February 26, 2019, Dr. Seth Berkley, Chief Executive Officer, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, paid a courtesy call to Mr. Taro Kono, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, for approximately 15 minutes. The overview of the meeting is as follows;
1. Foreign Minister Kono first stated that, Gavi has greatly contributed to achiving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and human security, which Japan promotes, so that Japan will continue to actively cooperate with Gavi as a critical partner of Japan.
2. In addition, Foreign Minister Kono stated that through G20 and TICAD7 to be held in Japan this year, Japan would like to focus its efforts on health.
3. Dr. Berkley answered that Gavi appreciates Japan’s support and stressed that immunization is important for promoting the achievement of Unversal Health Coverage.
4. Foreign Minister Kono and Dr. Berkley also discussed the contribution of Japanese staff in Gavi and futher collaboration between Japan and Gavi to utilize innovative technologies of Japaese companies.
