On October 6, commencing at 12:00 p.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. Taro Kono, Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a Foreign Ministers’ Meeting with H.E. Mrs. Kamissa Camara, Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Mali, who is visiting Japan for the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) Ministerial Meeting. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

1. At the outset, Minister Kono welcomed Minister Camara’s participation in the TICAD Ministerial Meeting, and congratulated her on her assumption of the position of Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. In response, Minister Camara expressed gratitude for the close cooperation in Mali with Mr. Daisuke Kuroki, Ambassador of Japan to Mali.

2. Following that, Minister Kono stated that there was a signing of an exchange of notes regarding two grant aid projects totaling 670 million yen last month for food assistance for the people of Mali and security improvement support at Bamako Senou International Airport. In response, Minister Camara highly evaluated Japan’s support, and strongly indicated that the Government of Mali would create opportunities that would make Japanese companies and citizens interested in Mali while working further on security measures.

3. Furthermore, Minister Camara gave an explanation of security improvement initiatives in Mali, and Minister Kono responded that he would like H.E. Mr. Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, President of the Republic of Mali to participate in TICAD7 in August 2019 and give an explanation on Mali’s situation to Japanese officials.

4. In addition, both Ministers had an exchange of views regarding cooperation in the international arena, including Security Council reform.
