On October 7, commencing at 11:20 a.m. for approximately 10 minutes, Mr. Taro Kono, Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a Foreign Ministers’ Meeting with H.E. Mr. Mamadou Tangara, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad of the Republic of The Gambia, who is visiting Japan for the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) Ministerial Meeting. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

1. At the outset, Minister Kono acknowledged the visit to Japan by Minister Tangara in 2016 as Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of The Gambia to the UN and stated that he was very pleased to be able to welcome him as Minister of Foreign Affairs this time, and that he would like to cooperate toward strengthening bilateral relations going forward. Minister Kono also indicated that Japan would provide food assistance for improving food security in Gambia, and stated that he would like to continue to cooperate on stability and development in the country.

2. Following that, Minister Tangara expressed gratitude for the warm welcome by Minister Kono, and stated that Japan’s support is important given the serious food security issue facing The Gambia.

3. In addition, both Ministers held an exchange of views on the North Korea situation, the issue of disarmament, and other topics.
