On October 7, commencing at 4 p.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. Taro Kono, Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a Foreign Ministers’ Meeting with H.E. Mr. Mamadou Alpha Barry, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Burkina Faso, who is visiting Japan for the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) Ministerial Meeting. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

1. At the outset, Minister Kono wholeheartedly welcomed Minister Barry’s participation in the TICAD Ministerial Meeting, and stated that he would like to continue to promote cooperative relations with Burkina Faso through mutual visits by officials.

2. Following that, Minister Kono referenced the implementation of security equipment provision totaling 650 million yen which was recently signed, and indicated that Japan would provide food assistance that would contribute to ensuring food security in Burkina Faso. In response, Minister Barry expressed gratitude for Japan’s support for Burkina Faso to ensure food security, infrastructure improvement and public safety, and promised cooperation toward TICAD7 next year.

3. Also, both Ministers conducted an exchange of views regarding the peace and stability in the G5 Sahel region, and Minister Barry stated his expectations for Japan’s contributions in this field.

4. In addition, the two Ministers held an exchange of views regarding cooperation in the international arena including the North Korea situation and Security Council reform.
