General Election in Fiji
(Statement by Press Secretary Takeshi Osuga)

November 20, 2018

1. Japan welcomes that the general election in Fiji, the second that was held after the military coup in December 2006, was conducted in a peaceful manner on 14th November, and The Honourable Rear Admiral (Retired) Josaia Voreqe BAINIMARAMA was reappointed as the Prime Minister of the Republic of Fiji.

2. Japan joined the Multinational Observer Group (MOG) to monitor the election. Japan supports the positive evaluation by MOG, which states that “the outcome of the 2018 Fijian General Election is on track to reflect the will of Fijian voters and that Fijian voters were able to exercise their right to vote freely,” and considers the general election was an indication towards the consolidation of democracy in Fiji.

3. Japan will continue to enhance Japan-Fiji relationship further towards the future.
