Formation of the New Government in Iraq
(Statement by Foreign Minister Taro Kono)
1. On October 25, the Iraqi Council of Representatives approved 14 ministers among the Cabinet Ministers' list submitted by Prime Minister-designate Dr. Adel Abdul-Mahdi, and the new Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Abdul-Mahdi was formed.
2. The Government of Japan welcomes the formation of the new government in Iraq, and appreciates the efforts thus far of the various political parties within Iraq. The Government of Japan further hopes that the vacant minister positions will be appointed as soon as possible, and that the new government and the people of Iraq will overcome the differences of religions and ethnic groups and work together toward the stabilization of the security situation and the economic reconstruction.
3. The Government of Japan also intends to cooperate with the new Iraqi government with a view to further enhancing bilateral relations and tackling the various challenges in the Middle East.
