Support for the UN Project for Rapid Deployment of Enabling Capabilities・ Asia and the surrounding regions

1. Japan will support the trial training of engineering personnel from countries in Asia and the surrounding regions on the operation of heavy engineering equipment under the UN Project for Rapid Deployment of Enabling Capabilities. This project is implemented by the UN Department of Field Support and will take place in Hanoi from November 5th.

2. Japan has earned solid credibility for its engineering and transport units, which are indispensable for enabling the smooth operations of PKOs. To support the rapid deployment of PKOs and bring about high quality operations, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe expressed a commitment to contribute to the rapid deployment of these equipment and personnel with engineering capabilities at the 1st Leaders’ Summit on Peacekeeping held at the UN Headquarters in September 2014. Following this commitment, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Defense together with other relevant Ministry have supported this project by providing financial contribution to the UN and dispatching JSDF personnel and officers to conduct training of engineering personnel from African countries since 2015.

3. This year, the UN has decided to launch this project in Asia and the surrounding regions. Ministry of Foreign Affairs provided approx. 35 million US dollars to the UN for conducting training and will dispatch 19 personnel from the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force and 1 Program Liaison and Coordination Officer from Cabinet Office.

4. Furthermore, based on the lessons learned from the trial training, the UN is planning to conduct a full-scale training next year.
