Approval of H.E. Ms. Michelle Bachelet Jeria, Former President of the Republic of Chile, as the next United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights by the UN General Assembly

1. The Government of Japan welcomes the official approval of H.E. Ms. Michelle Bachelet Jeria, Former President of the Republic of Chile, as the next UN High Commissioner for Human Rights at the UN General Assembly’s plenary session on August 10.

2. In addition to her excellent achievements as former Chilean President, Ms. Bachelet served as the first Executive Director of the UN Women, and has worked tirelessly to tackle a number of global issues including those in the human rights field. In so doing, she has closely cooperated with Japan. The Government of Japan has high hopes that Ms. Bachelet will exercise strong leadership once she assumes her new position as the next High Commissioner for Human Rights on September 1.

3. The Government of Japan will continue to contribute to the protection and promotion of human rights in the international community through stronger cooperation with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
