Violence in Nicaragua
(Statement by Press Secretary Norio Maruyama)

July 3, 2018

1. Japan expresses its deep concern over the large number of casualties caused by the ongoing clashes and violent incidents in the Republic of Nicaragua. Japan expresses its condolences to the bereaved families, and extends its heartfelt sympathies to those who have been injured.

2. Japan calls for the immediate cessation of violent activities, and bearing in mind that the “Declaration of Support for the People of Nicaragua” was adopted by consensus in the regular session of the General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) on June 5 (local time), Japan strongly supports a steady implementation of the declaration. Japan also welcomes that the Government of Nicaragua has accepted the dispatch of a Special Monitoring Mechanism for Nicaragua (MESENI) and an Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts (GIEI) by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) and an on-site investigation by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), and expects that all the parties involved will cooperate so that those duties can be carried out smoothly.

3. Japan believes that dialogue and consultation according to the principles of democracy are important, and strongly hopes that the problems concerned will be resolved through the national dialogue being carried out under the mediation of the Episcopal Conference of Nicaragua.
