The Recent Situation Between Ethiopia and Eritrea

1. The Government of Japan welcomes a series of announcements by both Ethiopia and Eritrea aimed at improving their relations, which include the announcement by Dr. Abiy Ahmed Ali, Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, that Ethiopia will accept and implement the Algiers Agreement and the decision of the Eritrea-Ethiopia Boundary Commission, and the announcement by Mr. Isaias Afwerki, President of the State of Eritrea, that he intends to dispatch a delegation to Ethiopia.
2. The Government of Japan expresses its hope that the relationship between Ethiopia and Eritrea will normalize, and that the border issue between the two countries will be resolved peacefully.
3. The Government of Japan intends to continue to cooperate with both Ethiopia and Eritrea to ensure that the improved relationship between the two countries would contribute to the stability of the Horn of Africa region.
