1. On January 30 (Tuesday), the Government of Japan held its second Japan-FAO Strategic Consultation Meeting with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. Japan was represented by Ms. Misako Takahashi, Director of the Economic Security Division, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Dr. Tatsuya Go, Director of the International Organizations Division, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. FAO was represented by Dr. Daniel Gustafson, Deputy Director-General (Programmes)

2. Building upon the collaborative efforts made since the last Consultation Meeting, Japan and FAO reviewed the progress such as; A) financial contributions from Japan to FAO including Emergency Grant Aid, B) wider public visibility of FAO’s activities and achievements in Japan and C) contributions of Japanese staff at FAO, and shared the view to further strengthen their partnership and to hold the third Japan-FAO Strategic Consultation Meeting in 2019.

3. In particular, Japan and FAO reaffirmed that they would jointly make continuous efforts to further increase the number of Japanese staff at FAO with a shared aim to meet its desired level.

4. Furthermore, Japan and FAO discussed that they would strengthen their collaboration in enhancing the humanitarian-development nexus on regional basis and in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in areas such as nutrition, forestry and climate change. They also exchanged views on the collaboration in G20 under the Japanese Presidency in 2019; the Seventh Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD VII) in 2019; and the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games and related events.

Reviewing their partnership thus far, on January 2017, Japan and FAO held their first Japan-FAO Strategic Consultation Meeting at the FAO Headquarters in Rome with a view to address major challenges and opportunities concerning food security, nutrition and agriculture, forestry and fisheries, and further promote their strategic partnership. Consultation Meeting this time in Tokyo is the second meeting following the previous one in Rome.

FAO (with its headquarters in Rome) is the UN specialized agency in food and agriculture established in 1945, and has a membership of 194 Member Nations (Japan joined in 1951), 2 Associate Members and 1 Member Organization (the EU). FAO aims to contribute towards an expanding world economy and ensuring humanity’s freedom from hunger, including through the development of international standards in agriculture, forestry and fisheries, collection, analysis and dissemination of data and statistics, provision of international fora and technical cooperation in developing countries.
