State Minister for Foreign Affairs Kazuyuki Nakane Meets with the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh

On November 21 (same day local time), Mr. Kazuyuki Nakane, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, who is attending the 13th ASEM (Asia-Europe Meeting) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting being held in the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali, Foreign Minister of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

1. State Minister Nakane expressed gratitude for the hospitality extended by the Government of Bangladesh when Mr. Taro Kono, Minister for Foreign Affairs, visited the country. State Minister Nakane explained that Minister Kono had visited a displaced persons’ camp, and Japan was deeply concerned by the current circumstances of the displacement of people in Rakhine State, Myanmar. State Minister Nakane stated that the Government of Japan has newly decided to extend support up to 18.6 million U.S. dollars through international organizations for high priority areas, such as food. In response, Minister Ali stated that Minister Kono’s visit to Japan was meaningful, and expressed gratitude for Japan’s support.

2. In addition, Minister Ali explained the ongoing discussions between Bangladesh and Myanmar. State Minister Nakane replied that mutual cooperation and efforts by Bangladesh and Myanmar will be essential for lasting resolution and explained that Japan will continue to support the two countries’ efforts.

3. State Minister Nakane expressed his hope to give concrete shape to cooperation on realizing the Free and Open Indo-Pacific Strategy. On the North Korea issues, he noted that Japan and Bangladesh share the view that they will maximize pressure on North Korea, and intends to continue to collaborate. In response, Minister Ali stated that he concurs with Japan’s position and intends to collaborate.
