Telephone Talk between Foreign Minister Taro Kono and Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi
On November 16, commencing at 4:00 p.m. for approximately 10 minutes, Mr. Taro Kono, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone talk with Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi, State Counsellor of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. The overview is as follows.
1. At the outset, Foreign Minister Kono expressed his pleasure to talk to State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi for the first time and mentioned that he had heard that her meeting with Prime Minister Abe on 14 November was very meaningful.
2. Foreign Minister Kono explained Japan’s stance related to ASEM Foreign Ministers’ Meeting which will be held next week and wished for the success of the meeting. He also expressed his serious concern on the situation in Rakhine State and strong expectation for Myanmar government’s further efforts, and stated that Japan will provide its maximum support for Myanamar’s efforts.
3. In response, State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi stated that she would make efforts on economic, political and social aspects regarding the situation in Rakhine State.
