Japan-Iran Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Conversations
On October 16, from around 10:00 p.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. Taro Kono, Minister for Foreign Affairs, held Japan-Iran Foreign Ministers’ telephone conversations with H.E. Dr. Mohammad Javad Zarif, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The overview of the conversations is as follows.
1. Foreign Minister Kono stated that despite the United States’ new strategy on Iran announced on October 13, it is important for Iran to comply with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231 and to play a constructive role for the stability of the region. He also expressed his expectations that Iran seeks to settle any issues through dialogue. In addition, Foreign Minister Kono emphasized that Japan supports the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and will cooperate with Iran for its implementation.
2. In response, Foreign Minister Zarif appreciated Japan’s position of supporting the JCPOA, and stated that Iran has been complying with the agreement and intends to continue its compliance in the future as well.
