Attack in Kabul (Statement by Foreign Press Secretary Norio Maruyama)

1. Japan is strongly shocked and infuriated by the attack with a massive explosion which occurred at the center of Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, on 31 May and caused many casualties. Japan expressed its sincere condolences to those who lost their lives and their bereaved families. Japanese nationals who worked in the Embassy of Japan in Afghanistan have suffered minor injuries due to this attack which also caused material damage to facilities of the Embassy.

2. Such act of terrorism cannot be tolerated for any reason and Japan firmly condemns it. Japan reiterates that it condemns terrorism in its all forms regardless of its purposes and that no act of terrorism can be justified.

3. It is our hope that Afghanistan will continue to make its utmost efforts for the stability of the country. Japan will continue its support for a more stable Afghanistan while paying full attention to safety measures of people at the site.
