Exchange of diplomatic notes for the entry into force of the Japan-Uruguay Investment Agreement
1. On March 15, the exchange of diplomatic notes for the entry into force of the Agreement between Japan and the Oriental Republic of Uruguay for the Liberalization, Promotion and Protection of Investment (the Japan-Uruguay Investment Agreement) (PDF) took place in Montevideo, the capital city of Uruguay. Accordingly, this Agreement will enter into force on April 14, 2017.
2. This Agreement sets out comprehensive and detailed items relating to the liberalization, promotion and protection of investment. The entry into force of this Agreement is expected to improve the legal stability of the investment environment, promote investment between the two countries and mutual people-to-people exchanges accompanying investment, as well as further advance economic relations between the two countries.
The Japan-Uruguay Investment Agreement stipulates the treatments accorded to investment activities and investments when an investor (an enterprise etc.) of a Contracting Party invests in the area of the other Contracting Party, such as most-favored-nation treatment, national treatment, provisions for free transfers and compensation for expropriation, and procedures for dispute settlements.
