Oslo Humanitarian Conference on Nigeria and the Lake Chad Region

1. On February 24, the Oslo Humanitarian Conference on Nigeria and the Lake Chad Region was held in Oslo, Norway, where H.E. Mr. Toshio Kunikata, Ambassador of Japan to Norway, attended representing the Government of Japan.

2. In the Lake Chad Region including Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria, a large number of the local population have been displaced due to the terrorist acts conducted by the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram. This region is facing a serious humanitarian crisis with over 10 million people in need of life-saving assistance.

3. Sharing a critical concern on the humanitarian situation in the Lake Chad Region with the relevant countries, Japan announced at the conference its assistance of about 48 million USD, aimed at improving the situation.

4. Japan raised the issue of social stability (PDF)Open a New Window as one of the main challenges facing Africa at the Sixth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD VI) held in Nairobi, Kenya in August 2016. Japan will continue to make efforts in this regard, in close collaboration with the international community.
