Courtesy call on Minister for Foreign Affairs Fumio Kishida by Dr. Vladimir GOLITSYN, President of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS)

On February 2, commencing at 6:20 pm, for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. Fumio Kishida, Minister for Foreign Affairs, received a courtesy call from Dr. Vladimir GOLITSYN, President of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS). The overview is as follows.

1. At the outset, Foreign Minister Kishida welcomed the visit to Japan of PresidentGolitsyn and stated that Japan, as a State that attaches much importance to the rule of law at sea, pays tribute to ITLOS’s contribution to the peaceful settlement of maritime disputes and that Japan will continue its efforts to promote the rule of law at sea.

2. Furthermore, Foreign Minister Kishida congratulated ITLOS on its 20th Anniversary in 2016 and stated that ITLOS has steadily accumulated achievements over the past two decades and addressed difficult issues, and that Japan will continue to support ITLOS in various ways.

3. In response, President Golitsyn expressed his gratitude for Japan’s support for and contribution to ITLOS and stated that ITLOS will work proactively on emerging issues regarding the sea, with the advice of Judge Yanai of Japan.
