Result of the 2016 Election of the Member of the International Humanitarian Fact-Finding Commission (IHFFC)

1. On December 8 (local time), the election of the members of the International Humanitarian Fact-Finding Commission (IHFFC) was held in Bern, Switzerland, and Prof. Shuichi Furuya, professor of International Law at Waseda Law School, Waseda University (currently Vice President of the Commission) was re-elected with the highest number of votes.

2. Prof. Furuya has been a member of IHFFC since 2012. He was elected as a Vice President of the same Commission in 2015. He has made significant contribution in the area of international law, including international humanitarian law and international criminal law, both within and outside of Japan.

3. It is significant for Japan, which places great importance on strengthening respect for international humanitarian law that Prof. Furuya contributes to the efforts of IHFFC by harnessing his wide expertise regarding international humanitarian law. The Government of Japan continues to support such efforts.
