The Terrorist Attack in Iraq
(Statement by Foreign Press Secretary Yasuhisa Kawamura)

November 25, 2016

1. We are deeply shocked and outraged by the terrorist attack in Hilla that killed at least 80 people and left many more injured. The attack, which occurred around 100 km south of Baghdad, presumably targeted pilgrims who were participating in the “Arbaeen” Shia Muslim religious ritual. We express our deepest condolences to the victims and their families and strongly condemn such heinous attacks against innocent people.

2. We are deeply concerned about the rising number of deadly terrorist attacks, including the one in Hilla, thought to be committed by ISIL since the Government of Iraq announced on 17 October the launch of military operation to liberate Mosul. The Government of Japan reiterates its strong solidarity with the people and the Government of Iraq and will continue to make the utmost efforts for peace and stability in the country.
