Arrangement between the United States and Russia on cessation of hostilities in Syria
(Statement by Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida)
1. On September 9,a nation-wide cessation of hostilities arrangement was reached between U.S. Secretary of State Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov. Japan welcomes the arrangement and highly appreciates efforts by both the U.S and Russia. We urge all concerned parties to accept and comply with the arrangement. It is our firm belief that, this arrangement taking hold and humanitarian access being improved, will lead to progress in the UN-led political process.
2. Since the start of the Syrian crisis, Japan has implemented more than $1.64 billion in assistance in Syria, Iraq, and neighboring countries. As we continue to prioritize urgent humanitarian needs, we also intend to look toward the provision of assistance in view of development aspects.
