The 21st Century Panglong Union Peace Conference Held in Myanmar

1. The 21st Century Panglong Union Peace Conference for realizing national reconciliation and peace in the Republic of the Union of Myanmar was held for the first time from August 31 to September 3 (same days local time). The Government of Japan welcomes that under the leadership of H.E. Daw. Aung San Suu Kyi, State Counsellor of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, and as a result of the cooperation of the relevant parties, this Conference took place with participation from representatives of many ethnic armed groups, the Government of Myanmar and Myanmar’s armed forces. The Government of Japan appreciates that this Conference as an important step to realizing ultimte national reconciliation and peace, and will observe the course of the discussions going forward.
2. Mr. Yohei Sasakawa, Special Envoy of the Government of Japan for National Reconciliation in Myanmar, and Mr. Tateshi Higuchi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, attended the opening session from Japan, along with diplomatic corps from other countries.
3. The Government of Japan continues to support initiatives aimed at realizing national reconciliation and peace in Myanmar, and intends to further advance Japan’s long-standing friendly and cooperative relationship with Myanmar.
