Japan’s Assumption to the Security Council Presidency

1. Japan will assume the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for one month from July 1st to 31st.

2. On July 28th, Japan will host an open debate under the theme of “Peace building in Africa”, inviting non UNSC Member States and representatives of related international organizations among others. Open debates on the Middle East as well as the working methods of the UNSC are also scheduled to take place.

3. United Nations Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS) and nonproliferation are included in the UNSC agenda in July. Furthermore,the UNSC is scheduled to begin in July the process for the recommendation of a candidate of the next UN Secretary-General, to the General Assembly.
