The Terrorist Attacks in Iraq
(Statement by Foreign Press Secretary Yasuhisa Kawamura)

March 8, 2016

1. Japan is concerned about a recent series of terrorist attacks in Iraq that caused many civilian casualties. In particular, we are deeply shocked and outraged by the terrorist attacks at Abu Ghraib district on the outskirts of Baghdad and Sadr City inside Bagdad on February 28th, as well as the suicide attack using a truck bomb at the checkpoint near Hilla, a city in central Iraq on March 6th that caused dozens dead and many injured. We express our sincere condolences to the victims and their families.

2. Terrorism cannot be justified for any reason, and the Government of Japan strongly condemns such indiscriminate and atrocious act of terrorism. Japan expresses its solidarity with the Government of Iraq and their people, and hopes for further progress on national reconciliation in Iraq through peaceful political process.
