Reception to be Held for the Establishment of World Tsunami Awareness Day by the United Nations, Hosted by the Minister for Foreign Affairs

1. On January 21, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will hold a reception at the Iikura Guest House annex for the establishment of World Tsunami Awareness Day by the United Nations, hosted by the Minister for Foreign Affairs.

2. The resolution to establish November 5 as World Tsunami Awareness day, submitted by 142 co-sponsor states including Japan, was adopted by consensus at the UN General Assembly in New York on December 23 (December 22 local time) last year. In light of this, this reception will be held in order to express gratitude to the ambassadors in Japan of the UN member states and relevant stakeholders in Japan (such as Diet members and heads of international organizations) for their efforts thus far, and to disseminate Japan’s knowledge and experience in the field of disaster risk reduction and future initiatives relating to World Tsunami Awareness Day.
