Japan-EU Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Talk
On January 6, commencing at 7:40 p.m. for approximately 10 minutes, Mr. Fumio Kishida, Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a Japan-EU Foreign Ministers’ telephone talk with Ms. Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice-President of the European Commission. The overview of the talk is as follows.
1. Foreign Minister Kishida stated that the recent action by North Korea constitutes a grave security threat to the peace and safety of the region and the international community, that Japan views this action as unacceptable and strongly condemns it, that this action is a clear violation of relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and the Joint Statements of the Six-Party Talks, that it is extremely important for the international community to firmly respond, and that Japan intends to collaborate with the European Union and G7 countries in this regard.
2. In response, High Representative Mogherini stated that the European Union also finds the current situation regrettable and has issued a statement expressing the same concerns, and the European Union is placing importance on exchanging information and collaborating with Japan and the other Security Council members and G7 countries.
3. The two sides affirmed that it is important for the international community to promptly take firm measures, and confirmed their collaboration on measures going forward.
