Courtesy Call on Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida by Heads of International Organizations

On December 17, commencing at 9:35 a.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. Fumio Kishida, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, received a group courtesy call from Dr. Margaret Chan, Director General of the World Health Organization; Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund; Dr. Mark Dybul, Executive Director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria; and Dr. Seth Berkley, CEO of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

1. Minister Kishida expressed his gratitude to the four heads for participating in the International Conference on Universal Health Coverage and the Global Fund's Replenishment Preparatory Meeting; conveyed the policy of Japan to take the opportunities of the G7 Ise-Shima Summit and the TICAD VI to promote the response to public health emergencies and universal health coverage (UHC) and to actively contribute to the strengthening of the health systems. He also stated that the global partnership involving governments, international organizations, and the private sector is essential to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

2. In response, the four heads praised the leadership of Japan for the efforts in the health area up to now, and expressed their hopes for the Ise-Shima Summit in 2016. There were also remarks seeking the strengthening of the relationship between Japan and these international organizations in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

3. In closing, Minister Kishida requested close cooperation toward the G7 Ise-Shima Summit and the TICAD VI.
