Japan to Participate in the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI) Exercise MARU 2015 to be Hosted by New Zealand

1. Japan will participate in the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI) Exercise MARU 2015 that will be hosted by New Zealand from November 16 to 19.

2. The PSI is a global initiative to study for implementing possible measures within the international law and national laws of respective countries, in order to interdict the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and missiles, along with related materials, which pose a threat to the peace and stability of the international community. Japan has been actively participating in the initiative since its inception. This exercise will be the second exercise of Asia-Pacific Exercise on Rotation, which was decided at the 10th Anniversary High Level Political Meeting of the Proliferation Security Initiative the year before last.

he activities of the PSI do not target any particular states or non-state actors.

3. Japan will dispatch officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Police Agency, the Ministry of Finance(Japan Customs), and the Ministry of Defense / Self-Defense Forces, and will take part in the tabletop exercise to be held in Wellington City, New Zealand with the aim of enhancing Japan’scapacity to halt threats to the peace and stability ofthe international community, and promoting global cooperation among relevant agencies, ministries and countries.
