Telephone talk between Japanese and Sri Lankan Foreign Ministers

Minister for Foreign Affairs Fumio Kishida held a telephone talk with Hon. Mr. Mangala Samaraweera, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka on March 19, from 2:25pm for approximately 15 minutes. The outline of the talks is as follows.

1. Minister Kishida expressed congratulations for the establishment of the new administration in Sri Lanka and Mr. Samaraweera’s appointment to the office of Foreign Minister. Minister Kishida said that Japan placed great importance on the relationship with Sri Lanka as reflected in the recent visit of State Minister for Foreign Affairs Minoru Kiuchi to Sri Lanka and explained that Japan would like to further develop the Japan-Sri Lanka relationship with the new government.

2. In response, Minister Samaraweera thanked for the words of congratulations and explained new government’s domestic efforts for the promotion of democracy and national reconciliation. Furthermore, Minister Samaraweera expressed his intention to further strengthen and develop the cooperative relationship with Japan, Sri Lanka’s longtime friend, in every field.

3. Both Ministers agreed to continue working closely together to activate high-level visits, expand trade and investment and enhance maritime cooperation between the two countries.
