Emergency Assistance to Vanuatu in Response to the Cyclone Disaster

1. On March 15, the Government of Japan decided to extend emergency relief goods in equivalent to 20 million yen (Sleeping pads, Plastic sheets, etc.) to Vanuatu through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in response to the request from the Government of Vanuatu following serious damage caused by the Cyclone Pam.

2. In Vanuatu, the Cyclone Pam was generated on March 9 and gave rise to enormous damage. In Port Vila, a number of buildings including houses, government buildings and hospitals were damaged and many residents were forced to evacuate. As of March 15, there are confirmed report of six people dead and more than one hundred thousand people evacuating. It is reported that the number of those affected will go up as the details of the disaster become clear.

3. The Government of Japan, in response to a request made by the Government of Vanuatu, has decided to extend this emergency assistance, from the humanitarian viewpoint and taking into account of the friendly relations between Japan and Vanuatu.
