Emergency Assistance to the Republic of Madagascar in response to the Cyclone Disaster
1. On February 10, the Government of Japan decided to provide emergency relief goods worth 17 million yen (tents, water purifiers etc.) to the Republic of Madagascar, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in response to the Cyclone Disaster.
2. Madagascar was hit by a cyclone from January 16 to 17 which caused serious floods in several areas including the capital of Madagascar, Antananarivo. The Madagascar Government’s statement on February 7 reported that 80 peoples were dead and the total number of those affected could be approximately 170,000. The cyclone also damaged such social infrastructure as schools, health centers and roads.
3. Japan has been supporting Madagascar’s efforts to achieve socio-economic reconstruction and to restore political stability after having overcome a political crisis over around five years. In response to the request from the Government of Madagascar, the Government of Japan has decided to extend the assistance in order to continuously support this country.
